Charlie's Angels Overview
At a time when boys played war and girls were left to play house, TV’s Charlie's Angels' changed the style of neighborhood games forever. Girls no longer had to don aprons to play a role on the playground. Thanks to the Angels, girls got to be smart and sassy in skirts and platforms, and also beat up boys. Charlie's Angels was filled with glamour, prime time action, and featured three foxy women in a battle against crime. The most distinctive characteristic of this show was that the three bombshells were sexy and sophisticated and their looks empowered women who viewed the show.
All in the Family Women Depictions
Women in this show were portrayed through the progression of the women's liberation movement. The wife in the show of course was a typical housewife but she still was outspoken and in a few episodes they depicted her as being smart. The daughter in All in the Family was in college! This shows a woman getting an education and not just getting married (although she did marry while in college) She also was a feminist as the show progressed. In this show, it is obvious that there is a focus on how the women in the show are developing, furthering themselves from the stereotypical "housewife."
The Brady Bunch Episode Clip
In this video clip the two girls Marcia and Jan are depicted as two sisters having a small argument over a simple trophy. The parents come into play and try to reason with Jan for her being upset with her sister Marcia because she feels that she gets everything that she wants. It seems like the mother plays a great role with problem solving with the dad to help their daughter out. The mother in this show is not portrayed as just a typical stay at home wife because she is depicted as having the same amount of authority as her husband. As they both have their own children from previous relationships they have a great parenting practice set up where the mother and father are both involved. Ultimately in this show, Mrs. Brady was viewed as a housewife, but also as a woman who had power.
Three's Company
In the show Three's Company, the women are portrayed as women with decent jobs. The women attain the jobs of a florist and a secretary, which may be viewed as very feminine jobs, but the fact that they each had a job was very important because it shows that women were flourishing from the typical housewife stereotype. The show is meant to show the evolution of the women's movement. In the theme song for Three's Company, it can be noted that the women are dressed more scantily compared to women characters in the previous decades. This represents the on-going transition of women in sitcoms.
